BEFORE: The Assassination of Franz Ferdinand
On June 28, 1914, Franz Ferdinand was assassinated. A bomb was thrown at his car by a Serbian Nationalist, killing him and his wife.
DURING: Christmas Truce
During World War I, on and around Christmas Day 1914, the soldiers of the Western Front put down their guns and celebrated Christmas together.
AFTER: The Poppy
The Red Poppy has significance for Australians and is worn on Remembrance Day each year. It is worn to represent those affected by the war. We acknowledge the memory of those who sacrificed their health, their strength and their lives for our country. The reason the poppy's, out of all flowers, are worn is because they were the only flowers that grew in the trenches.
